Attention Delhi residents! Liquor shops in 12 specific areas of Delhi are being shut completely this week due to the MCD Bypolls (local ward elections). The dry day started today (November 29) and will continue until December 3. However, if you live outside these 12 wards, liquor shops remain open normally. Residents in affected areas need to plan.

Key Highlights

This Week in Delhi:

  1. 12 MCD wards have dry days (Nov 29, 30, Dec 3)
  2. The rest of Delhi operates normally
  3. Reason: Local ward elections (bypolls)
  4. Plan if you live in affected areas
  5. Private drinking at home is allowed
  6. After Dec 3: Everything returns to normal

Why Are Liquor Shops Closing?

Delhi's government has declared a dry day (prohibition on alcohol sales) in 12 MCD wards because of the upcoming bypolls (special elections) to choose new ward leaders. When elections happen in India, the government ensures a peaceful and fair process by banning alcohol sales in that area.

A dry day means:

  1. Liquor shops must completely close
  2. Bars and restaurants cannot serve alcohol
  3. No home delivery of alcohol
  4. Violation results in heavy penalties

However, this is NOT a full Delhi dry day. Only residents of the 12 specific wards are affected. If you live elsewhere in Delhi, everything continues normally.

Complete Timeline This Week

TODAY - Friday, November 29:

Liquor shops in the 12 wards are completely closed all day. This is the preparation day before voting tomorrow.

If you live in affected areas and need alcohol, you should have bought it yesterday (November 28) before 5:30 PM. That was the last chance to buy. Starting from 5:30 PM Thursday, all shops in these 12 wards will be closed and remain closed today.

Unaffected areas: All liquor shops across Delhi's other areas remain open from 10 AM to 10 PM today.

SATURDAY - November 30 (Voting Day):

This is the most important day - the election day when residents vote to choose their new ward leaders.

Liquor shops in the 12 wards:

  1. Closed from morning until 5:30 PM (when voting ends)
  2. Can reopen after 5:30 PM once voting is complete
  3. Restaurants and bars also closed during this period

Why the restriction? The government wants to ensure that voters vote with a clear mind and without any disturbances. After voting is done (around 5:30 PM), shops can reopen for the evening.

Unaffected areas: Liquor shops open normally across Delhi - 10 AM to 10 PM.

MONDAY - December 1:

All liquor shops OPEN across entire Delhi, including the 12 wards.

Voting is complete. Counting hasn't started yet. Everything returns to normal business. This is a good day to buy if you need alcohol in the affected areas.

Timings: 10 AM to 10 PM (normal)

TUESDAY - December 2:

All liquor shops OPEN across entire Delhi.

The counting process continues behind closed doors. Citizens are not involved. Normal liquor shop operations resume.

Timings: 10 AM to 10 PM (normal)

WEDNESDAY - December 3 (Counting Day):

Liquor shops in the 12 wards are completely closed all day.

This is the final dry day of the election process. The government closes shops to ensure peace and order while election officials count votes and announce results. There could be celebrations or tensions depending on the results, so alcohol is banned for public safety.

Unaffected areas: Liquor shops open normally across Delhi, 10 AM to 10 PM.

After December 3:

Everything returns to normal Delhi liquor operations. All shops, bars, and restaurants can operate normally across the entire city.
