Alcoholic Liver Disease (ALD) is a health problem of the liver. It happens when someone drinks too much alcohol for many years. The liver gets damaged slowly. First, it becomes fatty. Then, it gets swollen (hepatitis), and later, it may become hard and scarred (cirrhosis). This can lead to liver failure.

ICD-10 Code for Alcoholic Liver Disease

Doctors use a system called ICD-10 to name diseases. The code for Alcoholic Liver Disease is K70. This code has many types:

  1. K70.0 – Fatty liver caused by alcohol
  2. K70.1 – Swelling of liver (Alcoholic hepatitis)
  3. K70.2 – Fibrosis (early scarring) from alcohol
  4. K70.3 – Cirrhosis (hard and scarred liver) from alcohol
  5. K70.4 – Liver failure because of alcohol
  6. K70.9 – Alcoholic liver problem (not clearly said)

How Many People Suffer?

In the World:

  1. About 4.8% of people in the world have this liver problem.
  2. Around 24 out of 100 people with this disease may die because of it.
  3. It is more common in men and in people who drink alcohol every day.

In India:

  1. 43% of liver cirrhosis cases in India are caused by alcohol.
  2. About 12 out of 100 people in India suffer from alcohol use problems.
  3. Some states like Andhra Pradesh have seen a big increase in alcohol-related liver and kidney problems in the last few years.

How Does the Disease Grow?

  1. Fatty Liver – First stage. Liver stores fat. Person may feel normal.
  2. Alcoholic Hepatitis – Second stage. Liver becomes swollen. Person feels sick.
  3. Cirrhosis – Third stage. Liver becomes hard and stops working well.
  4. Liver Failure – Final stage. Liver cannot work anymore. This is very dangerous.

How to Find and Treat It?

Diagnosis (How doctors find it):

  1. Doctor asks about drinking habits.
  2. Blood tests and liver tests are done.
  3. Sometimes a scan (ultrasound or CT) or biopsy is needed.

Treatment:

  1. Stop drinking alcohol completely – most important.
  2. Eat healthy food and take vitamins.
  3. Take medicine if the liver is very swollen.
  4. If the liver is fully damaged, doctors may suggest liver transplant.

How to Stop the Disease?

  1. People should know that drinking too much alcohol is harmful.
  2. Governments and hospitals must teach and support people to stop drinking.
  3. There should be health camps and check-ups for people who drink often.
  4. If someone has a drinking problem, they must go to rehabilitation centers.

Final Words

Alcoholic Liver Disease is a serious problem. But if found early and alcohol is stopped, it can be controlled. If not treated, it can damage the liver forever. So, we must spread awareness and help people live a healthy life.
