How Much Alcohol Is Safe to Drink?

Doctors and health experts say we should not drink too much. The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) says:

Men can drink up to 2 standard drinks in one day

Women can drink up to 1 standard drink in one day

(One standard drink is about 30 ml of hard liquor like whiskey, 150 ml of wine, or 330 ml of beer)

However, a 2024 study in The BMJ warns that even small amounts of alcohol can cause health risks like high blood pressure and cancer. Dr. Arora from Fortis Healthcare says, “These limits are the maximum, not a green signal. It is better to have 2-3 days in a week with no alcohol at all.”

Is Alcohol Good for Health?

Some people think small amounts of red wine are good for the heart. This idea became popular after the “French Paradox” study. But now, new research says the risks are more than the benefits.

A 2023 report in The Lancet Public Health by University of Washington experts says no amount of alcohol is good for health. It may increase the risk of cancer, heart problems, and brain issues.

Cardiologist Dr. Naresh Trehan (Medanta Hospital) says, “Don’t start drinking just because you heard it may help the heart. It is not worth the risk.”

Side Effects of Drinking Alcohol

Drinking too much or too often can hurt many parts of the body. It can lead to liver damage, cancer, memory loss, and mental health problems like depression.

Dr. Siddharth Gupta, psychiatrist at AIIMS Delhi, says, “Even drinking once in a while, in large amounts, can change how your brain works. It affects your mood and can lead to long-term problems.”

The World Health Organization (WHO) also says alcohol increases the risk of breast, liver, and mouth cancers.

Alcohol and Weight Gain

Alcohol has a lot of calories. One gram of alcohol has 7 calories (more than sugar). Beer, wine, and cocktails can quickly add extra weight, especially around the belly.

Nutrition expert Rujuta Diwekar explains, “Alcohol makes you hungry for junk food and stops your body from burning fat properly. People who exercise may also see slower results.”

A 2024 study in Obesity Reviews says drinking alcohol often leads to more belly fat and weight gain in both men and women.

Hangover Cure in India

Many people in India try different home remedies to feel better after a hangover. Some popular ones are coconut water, buttermilk, lime juice, and black coffee.

Dr. Sujata Kelkar Shetty, wellness expert, says, “There is no magic cure. Rest, water, and sleep are best. Some people take vitamins or ayurvedic drinks, but they don’t work for everyone.”

New products like Morning Fresh and party recovery shots are available in India, but doctors say not to depend on them.

Final Thoughts: Alcohol may feel fun for a short time, but it can hurt your body and mind if not controlled. Experts now say even small amounts are not fully safe. If you choose to drink, do it carefully and know the risks.
