The Story Behind the Brand
Cherrapunji receives over 22,000 mm of rainfall annually, yet faces water scarcity during dry months. This contradiction inspired founder Mayukh Hazarika to transform rainwater harvesting into a meaningful craft product.
Raincheck Earth Co. built a distillery 40 km from Cherrapunji that uses triple-filtered harvested rainwater, making Cherrapunji Gin both symbolic and functional. It became the first alcohol brand from Northeast India to achieve international exports.
Sustainability at the Core
Cherrapunji Gin treats sustainability as an operating principle, not a marketing layer:
- Harvested rainwater as the primary water source
- 12+ native botanicals sourced within Northeast India
- Zero-waste citrus processing, pulp donated to local farmers
- Energy-efficient Dutch stills are reducing energy use by ~70%
- Reusable stainless-steel bottles with ~70% lower carbon footprint than glass
Packaging & Design
Cherrapunji Gin is packaged in a military-grade stainless steel bottle, designed to be reused and kept.
Illustrations on the bottle depict:
- Khasi mandarin pickers
- Red pandas
- Bamboo forests
- Colonial-era buses
- Cultural monoliths of Meghalaya
The bottle won “Gin Bottle of the Year 2024” by The Gin Guide readers.
