Bushmills is an Irish whiskey brand made at the Old Bushmills Distillery in County Antrim, Northern Ireland. It holds the distinction of being the world's oldest licensed whiskey distillery, with a license to distil in the area dating back to 1608. The distillery itself was formally established in 1784. Today Bushmills is owned by Proximo Spirits, the same company behind Jose Cuervo tequila.

What sets Bushmills apart in the Irish whiskey world is its exclusive use of malted barley across its entire range. While many Irish whiskey brands shifted to using corn or unmalted grain over the centuries to avoid taxes on malted barley, Bushmills stuck with tradition. This is part of why the brand carries a reputation for depth and character that goes beyond the average entry-level Irish whiskey.

History

The story begins in 1608, when King James I granted a license to distil in the area around the River Bush. The distillery that would carry the Bushmills name was formally founded in 1784 by Hugh Anderson. Over the following centuries it went through fires, world wars, American Prohibition, and several changes in ownership, including a long stretch under Irish Distillers, a period owned by Diageo, and its current ownership under Proximo Spirits since 2014.

Through all of this, Bushmills held onto one core decision: to keep using 100% malted barley in its whiskey, even when it cost more to do so. That commitment is central to how the brand tells its own story today, and it shows up in the flavour of the whiskey itself.

Signature Products

Bushmills Original (also called White Label) is the brand's flagship blend, combining malt whiskey from its own distillery with grain whiskey. Black Bush uses a much higher proportion of malt whiskey, aged largely in sherry casks, giving it a richer profile. The Bushmills 10 Year Old and 12 Year Old are single malt expressions, aged entirely in a single distillery's spirit as per the definition of single malt.

What Makes This Brand Unique

Most Irish whiskey brands built their identity around being light and easy-drinking, often blending in a large share of grain whiskey made from corn. Bushmills leaned the other way. Its insistence on using only malted barley across the range, combined with triple distillation in traditional copper pot stills, gives its whiskeys a fuller body and more complexity than what people often expect from an easy sipping Irish whiskey.

Flavor Philosophy

Bushmills whiskeys are generally unpeated, meaning there is no smoky character, which is typical of the Irish whiskey style as opposed to many Scotch whiskies. The triple distillation process the brand uses is known for producing a particularly smooth, clean spirit. Depending on the expression, you will find notes ranging from honey, vanilla, and light fruit in the Original, to richer sherry, dried fruit, and spice in Black Bush and the aged single malts.

Who This Brand Appeals To

Bushmills works well for someone moving on from their first whiskey brand and wanting to understand what Irish whiskey can taste like beyond the very lightest, most neutral styles. It also appeals to whisky drinkers curious about single malts but who want something gentler than a peated Scotch as an entry point.

Responsible Drinking Note

Bushmills is an imported spirit and, like all whiskey, should be enjoyed in moderation. Always drink responsibly and only if you are of legal drinking age in your state.
