Scapa Whisky
- FounderMacfarlane & Townsend
Founded31 Dec 1884
Scapa is an Orkney single malt Scotch whisky distillery with a quiet, almost hidden reputation - which makes its awards all the more striking. Situated on the wind-swept Orkney Islands off the northern coast of Scotland, Scapa sits in one of the most remote whisky-producing corners of the world.
It is owned by Chivas Brothers, part of the Pernod Ricard group, but retains an identity firmly rooted in its island origins. The whisky it produces is notably gentle for an island malt - maritime without being pungent, and fruit-forward in a way that surprises many first-time drinkers.

History
Scapa Distillery was founded in 1885 by Macfarlane & Townsend. Over its long life, it changed ownership several times, was mothballed and revived more than once, and briefly served as a naval base during World War I.
The distillery is unique for using an unusual wash still design - a Lomond-style still - which contributes to the lighter, fruitier character that distinguishes Scapa from its more assertive Orcadian neighbour, Highland Park. In the early 2000s, Chivas Brothers invested in its revival, and today the distillery operates as a relatively small, largely unheralded producer with a loyal following.
Signature Products
Scapa's core range is compact. The Skiren NAS expression is the entry point - fresh, maritime and approachable. The Glansa introduces light peat through smoked malt.
The 10 Year Old, launched as part of an expanded range, quickly earned attention for its balance and expressiveness.
The 16 Year Old and 21 Year Old form the aged tier of the range, each offering greater complexity while preserving the distillery's signature gentle style.
What Makes This Brand Unique
Very few Scottish island distilleries produce a whisky this approachable. Scapa deliberately sits outside the heavily peated island malt tradition, offering a maritime character - sea salt, coastal air, light brine - carried on a wave of ripe orchard fruit. That balance makes it a genuinely versatile whisky: interesting enough for enthusiasts, welcoming enough for beginners.
Flavor Philosophy
Scapa's whiskies are shaped by their environment: the cold Orcadian climate, the long, slow maturation, and the use of American oak ex-bourbon casks as the primary vessel. The result is a house style built on peach, vanilla, citrus and a subtle salinity. Even the peatier Glansa expression keeps smoke as a suggestion rather than a statement.

Who This Brand Appeals To
Scapa suits drinkers who want to explore island Scotch without committing to the smoke-heavy style of Islay. It is also a strong recommendation for whisky newcomers who find Highland malts a little plain but aren't ready for heavily peated spirits.
The 10 Year Old in particular is a considered entry point into aged island single malts.
Responsible Drinking Note
Enjoy Scapa responsibly and only if you are of legal drinking age in your region. Occasional Drinker encourages mindful, informed consumption.
