XXXX Beer

Give a XXXX

XXXX, pronounced "four-ex", is an Australian beer brand from Brisbane, Queensland. It is brewed by Castlemaine Perkins at the Milton Brewery and is one of the most recognisable beer names in Australia.

The brand is built around easy-drinking lagers made for warm weather. The range runs from the traditional XXXX Bitter and the mid-strength XXXX Gold to newer, lighter and flavoured options like XXXX Tropical. If you have only ever seen Australian beer through the global lens of Foster's or Victoria Bitter, XXXX is the Queensland answer.

For Indian drinkers, this is a brand worth knowing about even if you rarely see it on a shelf. It is not a mainstream presence in India. Where it appears, it is usually as an imported can in selected premium stores, bars or duty-free outlets.

The story starts in 1878, when brothers Edward and Nicholas Fitzgerald began brewing in Brisbane, in the Milton area where the brewery still stands. Their early beer was a sparkling ale sold as XXX.

The name comes from an old brewing convention. Brewers once marked casks with X's to signal strength, and more X's meant a stronger beer. XXXX was simply a step up from XXX.

The brewery later became Castlemaine Perkins, and today it sits within Lion, the Australian and New Zealand beverage company owned by Japan's Kirin. Brewing still happens in Brisbane. The XXXX sign on the Milton Brewery is a well-known Brisbane landmark.

XXXX Gold, a mid-strength lager introduced in 1990, went on to become one of Australia's best-selling beers. That shift, from a strong traditional lager to a lighter everyday one, tells you a lot about how Australian drinking habits changed.

Signature Products

  1. XXXX Bitter is the original full-strength lager at around 4.4% ABV. Crisp, golden, with a mild bitterness. This is the traditional Queensland pub beer.
  2. XXXX Gold is a mid-strength lager at around 3.5% ABV. Smooth, light and built for easy drinking over a long afternoon.
  3. XXXX Summer Bright is a lighter, full-strength lager at 4.0% ABV, with fruit-flavoured variants in some releases.
  4. XXXX Ultra Zero Carb is a low-carb lager launched in 2024, aimed at drinkers watching carbohydrates.
  5. XXXX Ginger is an alcoholic ginger beer at 3.5% ABV.
  6. XXXX Zero is an alcohol-free lager.
  7. XXXX Tropical is a limited-edition lager at 4.0% ABV with mango and passionfruit character. It launched in January 2025 alongside a Great Barrier Reef conservation partnership.

What Makes This Brand Unique

It is proudly regional. Many global beer brands try to be everywhere. XXXX has built its identity around one state, one climate and one way of drinking, which is cold, light lager in the heat.

The reef partnership. Since 2022, XXXX has partnered with the Great Barrier Reef Foundation. Work so far has included helping farmers change irrigation practices to reduce runoff that affects reef water quality. XXXX Tropical was created as a limited-edition beer to support this work, with a AUD 100,000 donation at launch directed to seagrass restoration.

A strength-grading name. Very few beer brands are named after a brewing-strength marking. XXXX is a small piece of beer history on the can.

Flavor Philosophy

XXXX is about refreshment before complexity. The core lagers are clean, light-bodied and gently bitter, with little malt sweetness and nothing that lingers heavily on the palate. They are meant to be drunk very cold, and in quantity over a long session rather than analysed.

The newer releases follow the same thinking with a twist. Low-carb, zero-alcohol and fruit-led options let the brand speak to different drinkers without changing the underlying "clean and cold" approach.

If you enjoy light international lagers such as Corona or Carlsberg, the XXXX profile will feel familiar. If you prefer hoppy IPAs or rich stouts, this is not that kind of beer, and it does not pretend to be.

Popular Bottles

In Australia, XXXX Gold and XXXX Bitter are the volume leaders. In India, the picture is different. Availability is limited and uneven, and there is no confirmed official nationwide range. If you do come across an XXXX can, it is most likely to be one of the core lagers, and the label is the only reliable guide to what is inside.

Limited editions such as XXXX Tropical are even harder to find outside Australia.

Who This Brand Appeals To

  1. Drinkers who enjoy light, easy lagers and want to try an Australian take on the style.
  2. Travellers returning from Australia who want to revisit what they drank there.
  3. Curious beer drinkers who like knowing the story behind a can, from brewing-strength marks to reef conservation.
  4. Anyone looking for a fruit-leaning lager that still tastes like beer first.

It is less suited to people who want strong, craft-style or high-ABV beers, or who are hoping for easy access and an Indian price tag.
